Michael Burnett were you? You grew up from pro skateboarding's backyard. Can you ever remember a time with no skateboards? Yeah. Definitely. I can remember getting a skateboard. Aside from the first toy was when I was around nine. It was 1993, aChristmas gift. Jamie Thomas: What'd you get?I got a blank; some Trackers--not a trendy story. MB: Can you understand about ollies and kickflips From the get go? No. I was like a great deal of A List Of different types of skateboards with names.

My friend's Older brother was starting to skate. I really don't understand what they knewabout, but we got our info. We cruise around mountains and things from our residence, curbs. I saw a kid so we got to that waxinga curb up the road. MB did you run into the The Encinitas Skate Posse, ESP? I never knew about them. They were only up the Block but our paths never crossed. I was a little kid. It started and then we wouldgo around our area where kids had waxed curbs up.

 There was an elementary school we'd skate, and then we gradually ventured outinto Encinitas skate a grocery store or whatever. Eventually we made it. JT: When did you learn about sponsorship and all that? The first time was when I went to skateshop SecondHand Smoke, and a movie. It was dubbed by my father . This was the first timevideos were happening and I understood there were so many tricks. I really don't think I had even noticed a magazine yet. MB: Can you watch Second Hand Smoke and Realize it had been filmed in your region? No. Initially Rodney just amazed me Mullen.

"Whoa! Rodney Mullen does a mad shift He is spinnin' around!" It looked like magic.That is when I realized that is what a sponsor was and that the company was Plan B. JT: Did you believe that you desired to Become an expert skater? No. It wasn't until a year or so later, and Welcome to Hell came out and I realized what went on. Initially I was only attemptingto fide the plank down the hill without falling off. Drive correctly and ollie. After I watched those videos and could skate alittle bit I got an notion of how stuff worked.

 I still didn't think, "I'm gonna receive sponsored and become a pro skater," but Irecognized the concept just a little bit better. MB: Can you have any misconceptions about Skating when you were a kid? No. I don't think so. But watching Rodney Mullen in the beginning. You almost could not make sense of it. "How the fuck does thatwork?" JT: You were 11 when you sent a movie to Zero, But I did not get to view it. Then shortly after I recall you and I met one day inSan Dieguito and you were boardsliding the 10. Then it looked like a blink and we would see you each weekend at San Dieguito forsix months or so. It was the day that you just did the that we gave you a board at the parking lot. You were on Zero. How did itfeel to get sponsored at 12?

That was mad. That night I remember. At that Point Welcome to Hell had come out, and that and the very first Zero movie were whatI was really into. We decided, "Alright! Let's make a movie!" Determine and to try what I've got. So that night was unreal. JT: When I was 12 I was attempting to perform 180 ollies. The idea of getting sponsored was unimaginable. When you're 12, theMisled video was being filmed for by you. Can it seem ordinary or was it kind of surreal? Yeah. For the first couple of years, every Time I'd get in the car with you guys I'd be a bit shocked. MB: Jamie, what brought you to Ryan? There Must have been other small kids. JT: typically, and I'd skated with Plenty of children When you skate with children there's a generation gap.

We were in our earlyor mid-20s in the time, and normally there is this generation gap at which you can't really get down with them. You can't speak tothem. I remember that Bobier would make jokes that he was playing with a couple years such as Ninja Turtles and stuff, and wethought it was amazing. Ryan had a really good ability to adapt to dialogue and link to you. We did not actually think of him assome little child. Like little children small kids skated at the time, and he looked more comfortable on his plank. Additionally,he had been where we were from and we saw all the time to him and it made sense. I didn't really think Zero had all of thesethings going in the time, team-wise and I believed he would get, although that he had been the best, and I thought having himcould be cool and different. In addition, he reminded us what it was like to become a kid again.

At Mumford refused to go skatewith him, although Bobier probably doesn't know this. He is like, "Dude. He's 12. I'm not going skating with him!" So 1 time Ishow up for Mumford and Bobier's currently in the vehicle. Matt gets in and that he doesn't say anything. We skated all day in LAand the next day Matt was all, "That child's pretty cool." At first he was pissed that he had to skate using a 12-year-old. MB: Do you think it actually helped that you Didn't talk?

Maybe. I was not wanting to spazz At precisely the same time, although out I think that is just my character. JT: He did not talk that way, but when he did He was not annoying. He could handle himself a lot better than other kids his age. I was hyped to maintain the van. I actually Wasn't sitting there going, "Do not say something dumb. Do not say something stupid."I only wanted to find out what these dudes were around, and skating together was rad. The Zero team functions, there is a misconception that he aren't prepared for or compels his team riders to perform. Was there anyof that going on if you were a child?

Was Jamie pitching down you rails that are giant? Were you ever peeing your pants? I'd get anxious sometimes--particularly in the beginning. I thought that every time we went skating at least, or I need to getsome thing try something. I mainly went skating with Jamie, so I was looking for stains and the smallest rails where I believed Imight find a trick. JT: My philosophy has always been to try and Bring out the best in people.

I desired him to determine what he wanted to do on hisown and then try and encourage him to take it or at a different direction. Find and we used to try and then so it would look cool,I'd try and find a way to picture it. I'd try and picture it low or move something or the camera about to make it look moreexciting and bigger. MB: What about being around the elderly audience? Did you ever find? Did you ever walk in and all of thedudes are smoking crack and getting hookers or something? Nah. I was really always sort of psyched on Those situations. I never got freaked out or anything.

With the Zero group it wasnever as gnarly as anything like that. The nearest it likely got was the Hawaii trip after the movie. Seeing those guys and Greco,they were getting hammered. That was humorous to me. Greco was a little bit more out there than the rest of them but it wasn'tlike watching it messed me up or anything. I simply thought, "That is mad." The funny thing was that when my friends were smokingweed or whatever, I was more hesitant, because I didn't want to fuck up what I had with Zero. About what Jamie might think if hediscovered I wasn't concerned about getting in trouble I had been worried. I didn't want him to believe I was blowing it.

MB: Being the youngest on the team, was there A time where you felt like you did not want to be Small Ryan anymore? JT: We tried to speed up this!When we went to Hawaii and I was given by Mumford Some materials and beers. I felt cool as changeJT: This is.I was psyched.JT: Mumford ass!It was cool, man!JT I was attempting to have a holiday I likely wouldn't have been psyched although therefore I was. That was before I partook ofthe cervezas. It was funny however, because back home all of my Friends believed the Pissdrunx were the coolest thing ever. Here I am hangingout with Greco, and they were all switching up their gear and all that and watching him go off. He seemed insane. Since it wasn't happening as a few of the other guys as fast for you, did you worry? I have never been frustrated about it. I am just Skating and trying to improve. I know why it appears like this for thosemen--they're incredible! I know what the criteria are and what I am doing. I'm just psyched to be in it and also about which I amdoing. MB: There've been people who've crashed and While you keep getting better, burned.

That's cool to listen to. I'm Always working on the thing--an interview or a part. I'm psyched since they're all better than theone before if I look back even though they may not be revolutionary. I am not trying to get caught up worrying how I am doing incomparison to other men and women. There is a lot of people who have come up around Zero and I'm just psyched to get to skate withthem and get motivated by the dudes which are currently ripping.

JT: This meeting is basically your last Before turning pro milestone. If this thing hits, that is basically when you're pro. Howdoes that make you feel? I am It feels like I have worked hard, that I feel and It's been a long time. To turn pro feels great and I'm psyched there'repeople I respect who are backing me. MB: Who is crazier, Dan Murphy or Jimmy Carlin?With Jimmy, what you see is exactly what you get. He's Obviously mad. Murph is crazy, but it's stored up. He is not ready tolaunch it. MB?He sets it all out there. It's not an act. Talking on the phone to Jimmy is insane. JT: Hestart the conversation and'll phone you With, "Whatya call it?" It's like "I don't know! You called Me!" MB: So tell me about the direction of Mystery. What is happening with it? Is it rap?

Is this something you worry about? I do not have to be worried. I'm pro, fool! I left it! MB: People tell me that your girlfriend's a babe. JT: So you talked your way into the situation? I don't know. She's a cool chick. She's a babe But she is cool, so it is not like I needed to do anything sneaky or anything.  I was that, as I said Man--drunk, dance at the club. MB You up at the club each weekend? No. Never. Now it's more like cooking in your home.JT?Over a couple of decades now.MB: Do films make you cry?Not since Edward Scissorhands. This was my one And just. It was sad. JT: Do you have some goals in your life? Things You wish to do before you die? Just like a threesome? Well, there is that. Switch pro? Check. No, not really, I do not want to get too ahead of myself. Withwhere I am at, I am only dealing.

I am still working on my Spanish. JT: I want to do that. We ought to take a class. You had the sponsors the time. Are you anxious about the up at Adio? 'cause I've dealt with Jeff Taylor that the Whole time and when he left it was weird. Isn't there anymore. Hopefully things willwork out. There's so I only want to continue working on that, an Adio video we are filming. JT: What are you working on?The Mystery promo is coming outside.

Pete Eldfidge Will have a part in that, so I am psyched to see what he's got up his sleeve.He has been getting some crazy shit. MB: Let's do some word association, I'll say something.
